LONGMEADOW, Mass.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team split with the Wildcats of Bay Path University in non-conference action on Friday, Apr. 19.

Game 1: W, 2-0

The game featured strong pitching performances from both sides— first-year co-captain Sarah Wilkins (Alberta, Canada) threw a complete game shutout allowing only two hits and striking out 11 batters.

Wilkins contributed to her own cause driving in a run in the first inning, followed by a RBI-double from Emily Hutchins (Kennebunk, Maine). Timely hitting in the opening frame proved to be the difference-maker in securing the victory.

Game 2: L, 8-7

The second of the doubleheader featured a back-and-forth affair, with both teams showcasing their offensive firepower. SMCC again struck first posting three runs in the first thanks to singles from Wilkins and first-year Abigail Ontengco (Brownfield, Maine). Bay Path answered the call in the bottom of the inning pushing four across to claim a lead.

The game remained close until the Wildcats extended their lead in the fifth inning tallying three runs to include a lead-off homer by Madison Sunderland. The Seawolves made a late push in the seventh, scoring three runs on a double from Hutchins, but ultimately fell short.

Bay Path's Sunderland was credited the win; first-year Jaida Case (Machias, Maine) suffered the loss tossing 4.1 innings.

The Seawolves now stand 13-5 overall and get back to work on Sunday, Apr. 21 at NCAA Div. 3 University of Maine at Farmington. The first game of the doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.
