Wildcats Fall to Wells in Field Hockey Season Opener

 

LONGMEADOW,  Mass.—Bay Path Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Belsen (Windsor Locks, Conn.) made 22 saves for her 70 minutes between the sticks allowing only two goals facing 30 shots for the day. Despite her inaugural effort in goal, the Wildcats of Bay Path fell 2-0 to Wells College Express in the 2012 NCAA Division III field hockey match.

Wells freshman forward Courtney Bastain (West Winfield, N.Y.) struck first for the Express scoring in the 30th minute of play off an pass by teammate and senior middy Shelby Moscowitz (Rochester, N.Y.). Belsen was able to keep the score 1-0 heading into the half.

The Express would strike again with an insurance goal with eight minutes left in the game. Junior forward Valencia Chavez (Lakeside, Calif.) would net the final goal of the game lifting the Express to their 2-0 victory.

The Wildcats made a valiant defensive effort for the game including a defensive save by freshman Alexandra Punt (Coventry, Vt.) who came off the bench. Offensively, the Cats struggled with sophomore Katherine Chabot (Brookfield, Mass.) tallying the lone shot of the day.

Bay Path is now 0-1 on the season and they will be travelling to New York to play in the Vassar College tournament next weekend.
