Roger Williams Wins 1st Home Opener Over Bay Path

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team picked up its first home win in program history with a convincing 3-0 win over Bay Path College on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the game, Roger Williams University President Donald J. Farish, Ph.D., J.D. dropped the ceremonial first ball in honor of the team's first home varsity game.

Despite the Hawks putting stick to ball throughout the period, RWU could not find the back of the goal, as the teams closed out the first half scoreless. Bay Path's Anna Meyer (Millbrook, N.Y.) stopped six shots in the half to preserve the shutout.

The tide began to turn in the Hawks' favor in the second half. At the 46:14 mark of the second half, Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) was able to get the Hawks on the board with her third goal of the season. Kaitlin Massey (Mendon, Mass.) fired a shot from the left side that ricocheted off the right post and right towards Curran. Curran was then able to knock in the free ball for the Hawks' first score.

Eight minutes later, the Hawks added another goal off the stick of Hailey Wolfe (Mansfield, Mass.). Wolfe was able to put in the loose ball after Meyer made a kick save off of a shot by Katchen Lachmayr (Reading, Mass).

Kelly Keating (Darien, Conn.) wrapped up the scoring for RWU at 58:57, chipping in a pass fromSarah Link (Blossvale, N.Y.) to set a new season high in scoring for RWU.

Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) picked up the win for the Hawks, playing the second half in relief ofMary Yurkevicius (Charlton, Mass.). Lavoie made four saves on the day for RWU in the combined shutout. Meyer finished the day with ten saves for Bay Path.

Roger Williams (2-1) plays its first Commonwealth Coast Conference game Wednesday at Nichols College, while Bay Path (0-5) travels to Fitchburg State on Thursday.
