Bay Path Loses to Smith College in Season Opener at Betty Richey Tournament

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.--Allie Stein tied two of her own school records as the Smith College field hockey team advanced to the championship game of the Betty Richey Tournament at Vassar College on Friday night.  The Pioneers will play in the title game against Vassar College at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Stein matched her school marks for goals in a game with six, and points in a game with 13.  The senior, who already has 18 points through two games of the year, opened the scoring just 3:10 into the game when she slammed home Rebecca Meagher's corner.   Stein added a second off a pass from Kristen Estes and the 16:56 mark, and Petru Bester made it 3-0 with her first career goal at the 30:11 mark.    Then it was back to Stein, who gave Smith a 4-0 lead at halftime with her third goal of the game.

The floodgates opened after halftime, as the Pioneers pumped in seven more goals.  Stein had two more before the half was five minutes old, followed by a goal for Elsie Odhiambo, who was making her collegiate debut in the contest.  Stein capped her goal barrage with an assist from Alexa DeJesus, and the Pioneers continued to pour it on, as Marissa Vara, DeJesus, and Meagher all found the back of the cage.

Abbey Petronzio started and played the first half in goal for Smith, while Maddi Wyda played the second half.  Neither was called on to make a save.  Anna Meyer and and Stephanie Belsen split time in goal for Bay Path.

Smith outshot the Wildcats 40-0.   As mentioned, the Pioneers will play the host Vassar in the championship game.  The Brewers earned a 2-1 overtime victory over Manhattanville in the opening game.
