Bay Path University opens with a 3-0 loss to Bryn Mawr.

Bryn Mawr, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr field hockey team opened their 2014 campaign in solid fashion earlier Saturday afternoon against visiting Bay Path University. The Owls rode two first-half goals to a comfortable 3-0 victory to get their season off to a 1-0 start. Senior forward Holly Constants tallied two goals in the game, while junior Ashlee Williams blasted in a goal of her own to complete the scoring in the contest.

The Owls were dominant in possession for much of the game, but because of Bay Path's solid defensive organization, it took the hosts some time before they got their offense squared away. Although the Yellow and White outshot the visitors by a mark of 29-1, it was still a scoreless game 20 minutes into the contest. That quickly changed just after the 20 minute mark. With Bay Path in a rare moment of offensive possession, a great defensive stick by an Owls player set up Holly Constants for a three-on-one starting all the way at midfield. With the players racing towards the Wildcats' cage, Bay Path keeper Anna Meyer came out to try and cut off Constants' attack. Meyer made a great save on Owls' first shot, but the veteran forward coolly collected the rebound and tapped the ball into the cage for Bryn Mawr's first goal of the season.

It appeared as if this goal might open the floodgates for the Owls, as the hosts got right back on the board just four minutes later. After a foul in the attacking circle, sophomore Katie Alpert set up to take the penalty corner for the Owls. Alpert laced a pass to the top of the circle where Ashlee Williams awaited the pass. After trapping the ball perfectly, Williams rocketed a shot past Meyer and into the cage to make it 2-0. However, Bay Path's defense bowed up after this goal, and it would not be until the second half that the Owls would strike again.

In the second period, Bryn Mawr still dominated possession, but the Owls were unable to push across that one insurance goal they were looking for. Finally, in the 63rd minute, it was Constants who once again came through for the team. After Bryn Mawr took possession away from the Wildcats, several Owls players raced in front of the cage looking to score. Meyer came up with back-to-back saves on Haley Newsham and Constants, but the senior forward was simply too strong, and she finally put the ball into the cage once more on the third attempt to close out the scoring at 3-0.

With the win, the Owls open the season to the tune of 1-0. Bryn Mawr will have a week off before facing their next opponent, the Pioneers of William Paterson University. Game time is set for 1:00 PM here at Applebee Field.

Bay Path visits Hood College on Sunday, 8/31 for an 11 am start.
