Bay Path defeats Mt. Ida 2-1 in NCAA Field Hockey action

NEWTON, Mass. – For the second straight game, Mount Ida College field hockey suffered a tight 2-1 defeat to a non-conference foe named the Wildcats.

On Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field, it was visiting Bay Path College that emerged with the win after a breakaway goal by sophomore forward Casey LaMotte (Enfield, Conn.) in the 58th minute.

The defeat sent the Mustangs to 1-7 on the year, while Bay Path earned its first victory, improving to 1-4.

Mustang sophomore Hayley Napier (Fairhaven, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season on the stroke of halftime to send the teams to the break tied at one, despite a 15-6 shots advantage in the first half for the home team.

Bay Path took the lead in the 24th minute through Ashley Seiferheld's (Dover, N.H.) first goal of the year, a tip in at the post on a feed from Jennifer Dawson (Buckland, Mass.), which followed one of six corners for the Wildcats. Bay Path held a 6-4 edge in that department in the first half, and the teams would eventually each earn seven corners in the game.

Mount Ida continued the onslaught in the second half, outshooting the Wildcats 7-1, but the only shot for Bay Path was the only one from either team that found the back of the net in the second half when LaMotte broke free through the Mustang back line and finished to the right corner behind sophomore Emily McConnell(Lowell, Mass.), who made three saves in defeat.

The visitors got eight saves from senior keeper Anna Meyer (Millbrook, N.Y.), and also a defensive save from sophomore Angela Younger (Charlemont, Mass.) to preserve the lead.

Mount Ida returns to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with an important game at Rivier on Saturday at 12:00 pm.

Bay Path hosts Daniel Webster College on Sunday at 2:00 pm in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) matchup.
