Season opener for Bay Path sees a "Wildcat" sweep of Lyndon State

Queensbury, NY - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon softball team opened the 2019 campaign with a doubleheader against Bay Path University on Thursday afternoon at the Adirondack Sports Complex.  Unfortunately for the Hornets, they came up on the short end of the score in both games, falling 17-3 in the opener and 9-1 in the nightcap.  The games were also the season openers for Bay Path.

Game 1 - Bay Path 17, NVU-Lyndon 3

The Wildcats scored 15 runs in the first three innings and pounded out 14 hits.  Lilly West and Katrina Peck both had three hits and three RBIs while Taylor Feraco added two hits and four RBIs.  West and Madison Goodhart both hit home runs for Bay Path.  For the Hornets, Alexis Britch (Essex Junction, VT) drove in a pair of runs while Cassandra Black (Tolland, CT) drove in one and scored one.

Goodhart went the distance to earn the win, allowing only three hits while striking out eight.  Amber Roberts(Berlin, NH) took the loss for Lyndon, yielding ten earned runs while striking out three.

Game 2 - Bay Path 9, NVU-Lyndon 1

The nightcap was much more closely contested.  After the Wildcats pushed across a run in the top of the first, Lyndon's Cecilia Chamul (Concord, VT) homered in the bottom half of the inning to tie things up.  Bay Path held a 3-1 lead after four innings, but broke the game open with six runs in the top of the fifth inning.

West was again the hitting star for Bay Path, delivering two hits and two RBIs.  Meghan Connors also delivered a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs.  Besides Chamul's home run, the Hornets could only muster a pair of singles from Black and Emma Moore (Hillsborough, NH).

Kayla Vance went the distance for the Wildcats and earned the victory, striking out ten in the process.  Roberts again pitched for the Hornets, suffering the loss after allowing seven earned runs and 12 hits.

The Hornets will return to action at the Adirondack Sports Center on Friday when they host Southern Vermont College in another doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
