Bay Path Falls to St. Joseph (Conn.) in Season Opener, 79-36

Bronson Leads Wildcats with 11 Points

HOLYOKE, Mass. – The Bay Path University women's basketball team opened its 2017-18 season on Wednesday evening but came up a bit short, dropping a 79-36 decision to the University of St. Joseph in non-conference action at the Bartley Center.

Freshman guard Emmeline Bronson (Shelton, Conn.) made her collegiate debut special, posting team highs with 11 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats. Senior guard Kaylee Herring (Worcester, Vt.) also reached double figures for Bay Path, recording 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while adding a game-high five steals.

In her collegiate debut, freshman guard Shameria Armstead (Brenham, Texas) added five points for Bay Path.

For St. Joseph, four players scored in double figures, led by senior forward Kayla Guest (Newington, Conn.) and freshman guard Raelynn Voislow (Windsor Locks, Conn.) who scored a game-high 15 points each.  Guest narrowly missed a double-double as she snared a game-high nine rebounds.

Senior guard Rajeen Mayo (Middletown, Conn.) and freshman guard Anna Chevarella (Derby, Conn.) added 13 points apiece for the Blue Jays.

St. Joseph sprinted out to a quick 28-3 lead after the first quarter before heading into the intermission with a 48-13 lead. The Blue Jays extended the lead to 70-21 after three quarters of play, but Bay Path used a 15-9 advantage in the fourth quarter to end the evening on a high note.

St. Joseph outshot the Wildcats 52.5% to 35.5% from the field, but Bay Path won the battle of the boards 34-30.

Next up for the Wildcats is a weekend trip to New York, N.Y. for the two-day Hunter College Tournament that gets underway on Friday. Bay Path squares off against host Hunter at 7:00 p.m.  Also on Friday, St. Joseph opens its own two-day USJ Tip-Off Classic with a matchup against St. Joseph of Vermont at 6:00 p.m.
