Bay Path Women’s Basketball Nipped by Southern Vermont 50-44

Herring, Armstead and Bronson Score in Double Figures for the Wildcats

HOLYOKE, Mass. –  Senior Kaylee Herring (Worcester, Vt.) led a trio of Bay Path scorers in double figures with 15 points, but a strong team effort fell a bit short as Southern Vermont topped the Wildcats 50-44 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball action Thursday evening at the Bartley Center.

Freshman guards Shameria Armstead (Brenham, Texas) and Emmeline Bronson (Shelton, Conn.) added 11 points and 10 points, respectively, for Bay Path.  Junior guard Joanne Nazario (Springfield, Mass.) and graduate forward Paige Marshall led all Wildcats with 10 rebounds each. Both scored four points to complete the Bay Path scoring.

Bay Path owned the first quarter, sprinting out to an 11-2 run nine minutes into the contest, eventually taking a 11-6 lead after the opening stanza. The Wildcats would hold a 23-20 advantage at halftime and a 33-32 edge after three quarters. Southern Vermont pulled ahead 34-33 after scoring the first basket of the final quarter and would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest.

Junior guard Maddie Main (Bennington, Vt.) paced Southern Vermont with 19 points and 22 rebounds, both game highs.  Mountaineer teammates Taylor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) and Brenna Hudson (Malone, N.Y.) added 11 points apiece for the victors.

Bay Path shot 32.8% (19-of-58) from the field, while Southern Vermont was just a smidgen better, shooting 33.9% (20-of-59).  The teams tied in the battle of the glass with both squads snaring 43 rebounds.

Both teams return to NECC action Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Bay Path (0-11 overall, 0-5 NECC) will host Wheelock, while Southern Vermont (3-12, 2-4) will entertain Mitchell.
