Bio

Steven Smith is in his 25th year as Director of Athletics at Bay Path University.  He brought six years of experience in intercollegiate athletics to the program, having been the head softball and basketball coach and part-time administrator at Bay Path University.

Steve completed his Master's Degree in Education with a specialization in Sports Management at Springfield College (1988), and his B.A. in Psychology from St. John Fisher College (1985). He maintains many professional associations and is First Aid and CPR certified.

He has developed the athletics program at Bay Path to include three USCAA Division I women's sports and has overseen the transition of Bay Path to become a USCAA Division Imember institution. At Bay Path, he has served as head coach of women's softball, basketball and volleyball. He also served as a Resident Director at Bay Path for four years, supervising a residential staff of six with responsibility of ninety-eight undergraduate women.

While at Bay Path University, Steve has spent a great amount of time creating a solid foundation of providing a quality and rewarding athletic experience.  This includes developing and administering the process of becoming a member of the USCAA and NCAA.  Starting in 1998, Bay Path University was accepted for Provisional membership in the NCAA Division III.  During the four years of Provisional membership Steve was the athletics department administrator responsible for guiding the program through this process.  In 2002 Bay Path University was granted full membership in the NCAA and now sponsors eight varsity sports. In 2021 the transition to the USCAA began with 3 varsity sports; spccer, volleyball and softball.

As a result, the three varsity programs sponsored by Bay Path University have maintained impressively high levels of success during the past ten years.  Bay Path student-athletes and teams have earned recognition for sportsmanship and coaching excellence, and have had record numbers of team members honored as "scholar-athletes" at the conference and association level.  Steve has developed many significant improvements in athletic training, facilities, budget and overall department management.  Steve is actively seeking ways to improve retention and graduation rates at Bay Path by enhancing the student-athlete experience, in part through educational programs and community service activities.

Prior to joining the USCAA, Bay Path University was a founding member of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and North Atlantic Conference (NAC).  Steve was also the past commissioner of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC), where he worked successfully with NAC colleagues to become a recognized NCAA Division III Conference.
