Bay Path Falls in the Opening Round of the Betty Richey Field Hockey Tourney

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- In a rematch of last year's Betty Richey Tournament Championship game, the Vassar College women's field hockey team knocked off Smith College in dominating fashion with a 6-2 win in the opening game of the 23rd Annual Betty Richey Tournament Friday evening at Weinberg Field. In game two of the night, the Wildcats of Bay Path making their first ever appearance in the tourney fell 9-1 to Manhattanville College.

Tomorrow Bay Path will face Smith College in the consolation match at noon, while Manhattanville will face host Vassar at the 3:00 p.m. championship match.

The Valiants of Manhattanville controlled most of the game controlling the offense with senior midfielder Alyssa Cougan (Rye, N.Y.) struck first scoring in under four minutes of the start off a penalty stroke. Sophomore forward Britney Themistocles (Kingston, N.Y) struck next at 10:22 which would become the eventual game winner.

Cougan would finish the game with two goals and one assist along with sophomore forward Megan Greene (North Kingston, R.I.). Themistocles would add another goal. Also scoring two goals sophomore forward Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y.).

With only six minutes remaining Bay Path's junior forward Deanna Flagg (Enfield, Conn.) would break up the Valiants shut-out scoring off a rebound to put the Wildcats on the board.

Senior Wildcat keeper Samantha Berrios (New York, N.Y) would face 32 shots tallying seven saves for the loss between the poles, while Manhattanville's goalie sophomore Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Penn.) faced two shots notching one save.

Manhattanville is now 2-0 on the season while Bay Path is 0-2.
