Bay Path Concludes Play at the Betty Richey Field Hockey Tourney, Flagg Scores Again

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y -- The Vassar College field hockey team's hopes of repeating as Betty Richey Tournament champions were dashed on Saturday as  Manhattanville College team won the 23rd annual Betty Richey Tournament with a 4-1 victory over Vassar at Weinberg Field. In the consolation game match-up the Wildcats of Bay Path were unable to overtake Smith College falling 12-1.

Junior forward Deanna Flagg (Enfield, Mass.) once again broke up the shut-out for their opponent scoring two goals during the tournament.

Sophomore Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich.) set two new Smith College records, for goals and points in a game.  Her 13 points blew away the old mark of eight, done four different times in 1981, 1983, 1984, and 1993.  Stein was not the only one to beat or tie a record - the 12 goals set a new school mark for goals in a game as a team, and tied for margin of victory, and Alex DeJesus (Somerset, Mass.)had three assists, which tied a record.

The goals came fast for Smith with a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes and coasted to a 10-0 halftime lead.  Stein got her first when Sara Mericer's (Portland, Maine) pass sped through the area to her stick, where she fired home just 1:58 into the game.  She made it 2-0 off of Sophie Demunynck's corner, and Sydney Burns (Woodbury, N.J.) scored Smith's third, breaking down the right to fire home an unassisted tally. 

Mercier got in on the action, scoring her first collegiate goal at the 14:27 mark, and Burns made it 5-0 two minutes later.  Stein made it a trifecta of goals with an assist from DeJesus at the 25:02 point, and DeJesus continued to turn provider by assisting Ahayla Rahman (Bangladore, India) to make it 7-0 with 26:22 played.

Stein nabbed her fouth with another assist from Mercier, and Raman and DeJesus wrapped up the first half scoring, right on the stroke of halftime.

Bay Path broke up the shutout with a goal from Deanna Flagg (Enfield, Conn.).  Sophomore Ruth Choate (Lewsiton, Maine) smacked an nice shot through the middle landing on Flagg's stick to slide through an open net. Both Flagg and Choate were named to the All-Tourney Team for their efforts.

Appearing in just her second career game, keeper Abbey Flemming (Beverly, Mass.) made five saves to earn the win.  Senior goalie Samantha Berrios (New York, N.Y.) made six saves for Bay Path.

Bay Path is now 0-3 on the season and will be back in action on Saturday, September 17 at Wells College for a 3:00 p.m. start.
