Wildcats Fall in Overtime Action 2-1 to AmCats

Longmeadow, Mass.-Anna Maria College prevailed in their first ever New England Collegiate Conference match in true sudden death style winning 2-1 over new conference rivals the Wildcats of Bay Path 2-1 in women's field hockey overtime action.  Sophomore forward Brooke Denver (New Britain, Conn.) notched the game winner in the 79th minute of play off a cross inside from senior midfielder Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.).

In the first conference battle of the Wildcats vs. the AmCats, Bay Path struck early when freshman forward Katherine Chabot (Brookfield, Mass.), NECC Rookie of the Week,  grabbed her own rebounded shot and found the back of the goal at 17:38 on the clock.

The AmCats answered the call after the half time break with freshman midfielder Kate Ketchum (Palmer, Mass.) knotting the match after a penalty corner in the 65th minute for Anna Maria. Denver tallied the assist on their first goal.

Denver would then come back in the first overtime and grab the glory for Anna Maria with the game winner.

Bay Path finished with 14 shots, eight of which were on goal; while Anna Maria had 17 shots, 12 of which were on goal. Freshman keeper MJ Steinmetz (Grafton, Mass.) was awarded the win with 6 saves, while senior goalkeeper Samantha Berrios (New York, N.Y.), NECC Player of the Week, suffered the loss with nine saves.

Coming off the bench two freshmen notched defensive saves, from Anna Maria defender Bridget Larsen (Hull, Mass.) and from Bay Path defender Kendall Piorek (Enfield, Conn.).

Anna Maria is now 4-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play, Bay Path falls to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the NECC, The Wildcats will be back in action on Wednesday, October 5th against Roger Williams for a 4:00 p.m. start.
