Wildcats Fall to Vassar in Day One of Betty Richey Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.– The Wildcats of Bay Path fell 4-0 in day one of the Betty Richey championship . On the defensive side, freshman goalie Anna Meyer (Millbrook, N.Y.)  made 10 saves in the contest and the Wildcats earned two defensive saves in the contest. Meyer faced 32 shots and 16 on goal.

The Vassar College field hockey team got a pair of goals from sophomore Enya Cunningham in the 24th edition of the tournament under humid and muggy conditions at Weinberg Field on Friday night.

The Brewers (2-0) will meet Manhattanville College (2-0), a 3-1 winner over Smith College, in Saturday's championship game at 1:00 pm. Smith (0-1) faces Bay Path (0-2) in the consolation game at 11:30 am.

Both sophomore midfielder Katherine Chabot (Brookfield, Mass.) and sophomore defender Rebecca Feaster (Ivoryton, Conn.) recorded defensive saves for the Wildcats.

Vassar overpowered Bay Path, getting off 32 shots in the contest, 16 on goal from eight different players. Vassar came out with a strong assault on goal, getting 20 shots in the first 35 minutes.

Cunningham notched both goals, her first of the season, in the first half. Her first tally came at the 9 minute mark off an initial goalie save and the second at the 27th minute mark off a scramble in front of the Bay Path cage. Junior Rachel Waldman earned an assist on the goal.

Senior Rebecca Smith, who had a career-high nine shots, got her first goal of the season – giving the Brewers a 3-0 lead – at the 47 minute mark. Junior Tina Caso assisted. Vassar capped its scoring when Junior Catherine Fiore powered a shot home off nifty feeds from junior Cameron Felt and freshman Bianca Zarella.
