Bay Path Falls to Smith in Consolation Match at Betty Richey Tourney

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.— In the championship match Manhattanville College scored three goals to winning its second consecutive Betty Richey Field Hockey Championship 5-2 over host Vassar College, while Bay Path fell to Smith College 11-0 in the consolation match Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field.

Despite going 2-0 in tournament play, the Wildcats placed two on the All-Betty Richey tournament team: junior midfielder Ruth Choate (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore defender Rebecca Featser (Ivoryton, Conn.).

Freshman keeper Anna Meyer (Millbrook, N.Y) made 20 saves facing 44 shots -31 on goal. Sophomore midfielder Katherine Chabot (Brookfield, Mass.) once again had the lone shot for the Wildcats.

Smith's Allie Stein equalled her school records for goals in a game and points in a game.

Stein, who set the records of six goals in a game and 13 points in a game in this fixture last year, matched that total again as the Pioneers broke into the win column (1-2).  Bay Path dropped to 0-3 with the defeat.

Stein got Smith on the board with an unassisted goal just 2:29 into the contest, and made it 2-0 12 minutes later when she put home a pass from Alexa DeJesus.  She then turned provider less than a minute after that, setting up Sydney Burns for her first goal of the season, and Sophie Demuynck's goal at the 24:16 mark made it 4-0.

Stein scored twice more to put Smith up 6-0 at halftime, and Smith kept pouring it on, as goals from Sara Mercier, Jenny Estes, DeJesus, and two more from Stein contributed to the final tally.

Savannah Lawson and Abbey Fleming each played a half in goal, and Fleming made one save for Smith, who outshot the Wildcats 44-1.

Bay Path will host Roger Williams on September 12 at 3:30 pm.
