Bay Path Wildcats Fall 5-1 to Wheelock Wilcats

BOSTON, Mass. –  Bay Path College fell 5-1 to host Wheelock College this afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference match at Winsor Field in Boston, MA.  Wheelock improves to 2-8 overall and 2-2 in league play, while Bay Path falls to 0-11 and 0-5.  Wheelock field hockey raised money through its "Score 4 the Cure" event in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month and also wore pink wrist bands during the match.  Both teams wore pink warm-ups in support of the cause.

Senior forward Despina Savvoulides (Norwalk, Conn.) registered her fourth career hat trick and second in the last eight days to lead the Wheelock College. Wheelock dominated the shots with a 21-5 advantage, including 13-1 in the opening half.  The home team also owned a 10-2 advantage on penalty corners.

Savvoulides registered the first two scores of the match with the first coming just 6:33 into the game when classmate Rachel Robohm (North Easton, MA)sent a cross from just outside the right side of the circle to the front of the cage, where Savvoulides was residing.

Savvoulides swept her shot against the Bay Path keeper, causing it to pop into the air and drop just over the line of the cage for a 1-0 Wheelock edge.  Savvoulides notched her 100^th and 101^stcareer points when she converted a penalty shot at the 9:35 mark for a 2-0 Wheelock lead.  Savvoulides' third goal of the afternoon came later at 65:02 when she intercepted a pass in the Bay Path defensive zone and deposited a shot into the left corner of the cage to give the hosts a 4-1 lead.

Freshman forward Bridget Renehan (Milton, Mass.) recorded her first collegiate goal on a rebound when she was able to put back a shot off the stick of junior forward Jenna Ghoman (Danvers, Mass.) at 26:12 for a 3-0 lead, which held up going into the intermission.

Bay Path got on the board at the 49:26 mark of the second half when junior forward Stephanie Belsen (Windsor Locks, Conn.) fired the second of two shots that were stopped by the Wheelock keeper, but senior forward Danielle Poulin (Waterville, Maine) was able to clean up the rebound and score her first goal of the year to pull the visitors to within 3-1.

Wheelock capped the scoring with just 63 seconds left in the contest when senior defender MaryKate Grenier (Fitchburg, Mass.) put a shot on the cage that was stopped, but Robohm collected the rebound and fed freshman midfielder Jen Ryan (Bellingham, Mass.) for her first collegiate goal and a 5-1 Wheelock cushion.

Junior goalie Michelle Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) earned the victory with three saves, while freshman keeper Anna Meyer (Millbrook, N.Y.) turned away 12 shots with some great athleticism for Bay Path.

Wheelock will be in action again on Tuesday, October 23 when it hosts NECC foe Anna Maria College at Winsor Field for an 8:30 p.m. start, while Bay Path returns to play on October 27, hosting Becker College at 11:00 a.m. for Senior Day.
