Bay Path upsets Elms College 2-1 for 1st win of the season

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College field hockey team fell to the visiting Bay Path University, 2-1, in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) match on Leary field Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Blazers move to 7-7 on the season and 5-1 in conference action, while the Wildcats rise to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in NECC play.

Elms wasted little to no time applying offensive pressure at the start of the first as they created lanes down the field and clinched their first corner opportunity of the contest at the 2:05 mark to which sophomore Hayley Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) connected to the stick of sophomore Madison Messier (Warren, Mass.) who fired the Blazers one and only score of the afternoon.

From there Bay Path would respond posting a goal of their own five minutes later off the stick of junior Casey Lamotte (Enfield, Conn.), who received a ball from the far right side from senior Kristen Oliveira (Thorndike, Mass.). Despite runs from both squads the teams would stay knotted going into the second half of action.

Bay Path entered the second on an offensive surge as they continued to make runs into the Blazers defensive end. Elms would post four shot attempts throughout the half but a Wildcat corner at the 40 minute mark would connect to the stick of junior Angela Younger (Charlemont, Mass.) for the second Bay Path tally of the afternoon, off of a sophomore Sabrinna Dublel (Agawam, Mass.) ball. Despite Blazer efforts the Wildcats would end the matchup holding the advantage.

The Blazers outshot the Wildcats, 9-5, during the contest. Sophomore Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.) collected two saves on the day while Bethany Rogers (Plymouth, Mass.) stopped three throughout the contest.

The Blazers will return to action on Wednesday October 19th as they will play host to Daniel Webster for a7p.m. start. The Wildcats will face off against Regis (Mass.) October 19th, with a 6:30p.m start time.
