Newbury Takes Halted Game 13-7 from Bay Path to Sweep NECC Series

LONGMEADOW, Mass.- Bay Path unable to stage comeback after Newbury takes the halted game score of 10-4 from April 21st to conclude the final five innings with a 13-7 victory over the Wildcats. With the win, Newbury completes the New England Collegiate Conference sweep of Bay Path after a 7-4 decision in the opener. Despite the tough loss, senior outfielder Katie Begin (Weare, N.H.) and freshman pitcher Keelin Dougherty (Northfield, N.H.) each had multiple hits for the Wildcats. Begin went 2-for-4 with three runs, while Dougherty went 3-for-4 with two runs.

Four Nighthawks notched multiple hits for the game with freshman infielder Joanna Robie (Andover, Mass,) leading her team going 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI including one double and one triple. Sophomore shortstop Theresa Hylinksi (Stratford, Conn.) contributed three hits as well including two runs and two RBI. While junior infielder Teressa Farioli (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore hurler Rebecca Roach (Charlton, Mass.) each chipped in two hits. Farioli had two runs and two RBI, while Roach added one run and one RBI.

The winning run was scored in the fourth by Hylinski after Robie launched her triple deep into right field. Sophomore outfielder Brittany Starcher (Dudley, Mass.) would shellack the final earned run in the sixth on a homer over the left-center field fence. Newbury would take advantage of some fielding errors in the seventh and score four more unearned runs.

In the fifth Begin and Dougherty would each do some excellent base running, despite a home run being recalled for Dougherty. Begin would score on an illegal pitch, while Dougherty who nailed a double on a ground rule.

Bay Path would start a late run in the bottom of the seventh coming up short. Again, Begin and Dougherty would start the ball rolling each with nicely placed singles. Both would eventually score off a 5-3 shot by freshman infielder Nicole Dexter (Delanson, N.Y.) and a rifle through the left side by senior infielder Kate Lowy (South Burlington, Vt.).

Roach picked up the win in the circle going the distance allowing seven runs on ten hits. She struck out 16, walked two, had one illegal pitch and hit one Wildcat. Senior hurler Alex Putnam (Topsfield, Mass.) suffered the loss without tossing one pitch today. She gave up seven runs, six earned, on six hits. She fanned two and walked two.  Reliever Dougherty finished the final five innings allowing six runs on seven hits, only two earned. She struck out four and walked three for the game.

Newbury finishes regular season play 8-22 with an 8-7 conference record, while Bay Path concludes the week with an 11-17 season record and 5-11 final conference record.
