Wildcats Fall to Mariners in NECC Conference Double Header Softball Action

LONGMEADOW, Mass.-  The Wildcats of Bay Path University fell 4-1 in nail biting opener going an extra inning, while top-ranked New England Collegiate Conference opponent Mitchell College easily clinched the night cap 12-1 in only five innings. Mitchell is now 8-10 on the season and 8-0 in NECC play, while Bay Path is now 2-14 overall and 1-5 in conference action.

The first game of the double header was a pitching duel for the first seven innings with both hurlers only giving up one run. In the top of the third, sophomore outfielder Nia Brown (New York, N.Y.) scored an unearned run for the Mariners after a free trip the first base.  Bay Path answered in the bottom of the fourth when freshman shortstop Lauren Vallee (Bristol, Conn.) launched her second collegiate homer, first on her home field, over the left field fence knotting the game. Vallee notched her first home run on the teams' spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The score remained tied heading into extra innings, the NECC places runners on second using the international tie-breaker rule beginning in the eight.  Freshman Leyla Cruz (Bridgeport, Conn.) was placed on and scored the eventual game winner after a double shot down the left line by freshman catcher Samantha DelConte (Enfield, Conn.). Senior Lindsey Romagnino (Totowa, N.J.) and DelConte scored two more insurance runs.

The Mariner's sophomore hurler Brittany Fiederlein (Hampton, Conn.) notched the win, giving up one run while fanning 13 batters. The Wildcats' freshman pitcher Sarah Paskiewicz (Ansonia, Conn.) suffered the loss gave up only two earned runs while striking out two batters.

Mitchell came out strong in the second game scoring three runs in the second and six in the third and added three more insurance runs in the fifth to cut the game short at five innings. DelConte once again led the way for the Mariners going 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI's.  Sophomore designated player Jackie LaFleur (Gill, Mass.) scored the lone run for Bay Path after singling through the right side. Vallee again notched the lone RBI this time sending LaFleur home on a shot to right field. The Wildcats were unable to string any more runs together.

Fiederlein again would notch the win giving up five hits and striking out six in the second game. Junior  pitcher Maria Carta (Middletown, Conn.) had the loss giving up 12 runs on eleven hits. She walked five and struck out three batters.

Bay  Path will be back in action on Tuesday, April 14th hosting Pine Manor in a double header beginning at 3:30, while Mitchell's next contests are at Fitchburg on Wednesday, April 15th with a 3:00 p.m. start.
