Bassett Leads Wildcats in 83-71 Loss to Mountaineers

HOLYOKE, Mass.- Freshman forward Haleigh Bassett (Millers Falls, Mass.) led all players with 16 points despite the 83-71 loss for the Wildcats of Bay Path against New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opponent the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont opening up conference play tonight at the Bartley Center . The Mountaineers are now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the NECC, Bay Path falls to 0-1 in league play and 2-3 on the season.

Southern Vermont senior forward Kala MacKenzie (Fair Haven, Vt.) topped her team with 14 points.  She shot .636 from the field going 7-for-11 for the night. Two Mountaineers tallied 13 points including senior forward Shaniquewa Barnes (Landover, Mass.) .  Barnes also garnered a double double leading the way defensively pulling down 13 rebounds as well. Her fellow forward sophomore Danielle Simmons (Rensselear, N.Y.) came off the bench also adding 13 points.

Southern Vermont took advantage of second chance buckets scoring 18 points to Bay Path's ten for the night. The Mountaineers also outhustled the Wildcats under the boards pulling down 22 offensive rebounds out of their 51 total boards. Bay Path only had 11 offensive rebounds for the game only tallying 42 total boards.

Junior forward Dallas Jackson (Springfield, Mass.) finished with 13 points and five assists. Junior guard Brenna Roy (Stafford Springs, Conn.) chipped in ten points and led her team defensively with seven rebounds.  

The Wildcats will be on the road facing Norwich on Friday, December 4th with a 6:00 p.m. tip-off. Southern Vermont hosts Becker in another NECC match-up on Thursday, December 3rd also at 6:00 p.m.
