Wheelock Defeats Bay Path in Women’s Lacrosse Rivalry

LONGMEADOW, Mass.- In the cross conference rivalry between both New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Wildcats, Wheelock defeated Bay Path 14-4 in women's lacrosse action today at Ryan Field. Wheelock was lead by senior attacker Emma Marrs (Old Lyme, Conn.) with a stellar seven goals and two assists. Bay Path's freshman Kaylee Herring (Worcester, Vt.) topped her team with two goals and one assist.

The Wheelock Wildcats struck first Marrs netting the first goal off a pass by teammate senior midfielder Molly Centore (Kennebunk, Maine).  Marrs would then pass the ball to Centore for the second goal three minutes later. Marrs and Centore would team up for the next two goals and in total eight as a tandem. The blue and gold Wildcats would notch the eventual game winner at 17:30 on the clock when freshman midfielder Molly Koon (Londonderry, N.H.) would score off an assist by sophomore midfielder Courtney Scherer (Pawcatuck, Conn.).  

Bay Path would finally break through at 14:52 on the clock. Herring would drive the ball herself to break up the shut-out.  Marrs netted the sixth, seventh and eighth goal for Wheelock. Herring would again be part of an offensive push for the maroon and white Wildcats passing the ball to junior midfielder Dallas Jackson (Springfield, Mass.) who tallied a goal with 37:00 second left in the first half.

Coming out of the break, Scherer netted their ninth goal on a drive down the field solo. She would then team up with Centore for the tenth goal at 12:37 after a dry spell for both teams.  Herring would answer the call on a free position shot at 8:44.

Marrs and Centore teamed up once again to score their 11th and 12th goal.  Wheelock's sophomore midfielder Violet Vig (Glastonbury, Conn.) struck at 4:24 on the clock with sophomore Ashleigh Girton recording the assist.  Koon finished off Wheelock's scoring at 3:22.

Bay Path's freshman midfielder Elena Helming (Maplewood, N.J.) scored the final goal of the game in the last ten seconds.

Sophomore starting keeper Meghan Lewis (South Berwick, Maine) and freshman Carina Lawrence (Andover, Mass.) split time between the sticks. Lewis gave up two goals, had two saves and faced four shots, while Lawrence also gave up two goals on three shots with one save. Freshman keeper Nicole Gousey (Enfield, Conn.) suffered the loss giving up 14 goals on 22 shots with seven saves.

Wheelock is now 3-5 overall and 3-1 in league play, while Bay Path is 1-4 on the season and 1-3 in the NECC.
