Nighthawks Fly Past Wildcats

LONGMEADOW, Mass.—The Nighthawks of Newbury College defeated host Bay Path College 10-2 today in a rescheduled match which had the Nighthawks as the home team to the Wildcats. Newbury, who was unable to play their home contest at their regular season field, travelled to Bay Path to play their New England Collegiate Conference match prior to the upcoming storm heading to New England. A pair of Nighthawks soared during the contest each garnering hat tricks for the day with sophomore forward Briana Tomaselli (Warwick, R.I.) tallying eight points and freshman midfielder Kelsey Landry (Milford, N.H.) notching five points in the contest.

Bay Path was lead by a duo of Wildcats with sophomore midfielder Keelin Dougherty (Northfield, N.H.) and freshman forward Nicole Crossman (Winsted, Conn.) each with three points.

Landry struck first in the 18th minute of play with a shot inside from a nicely crossed ball from senior Jessica Graus (Rochester, N.Y.). She would repeat scoring ten minutes later off a long ball shot from 25 yards back.

The score would remain 2-0 until 41:40 on the clock when Tomaselli found the hole driving past a defender and hitting the back of the net. This would eventual become the game winner for the Nighthawks. Less than a minute later, Newbury would take the ball immediately back up the field with junior Nicole Garafalo (Winsted, Conn.) connecting with a pass by teammate  from freshman midfielder Jamie Chernesky (Scotia, N.Y.) sailing  along shot from the right side over freshman keeper Marina Rhodes (Providence, R.I.) head.

Newbury would head into the halftime break with a 4-0 lead over Bay Path.

Chernesky would come back after the break and connect with a Tomaselli corner kick to score the fifth goal at 51:50 on the clock.  Less than a minute later, Tomaselli would again get her foot on scoring dribbling the ball down the field past two Bay Path defenders tallying the sixth goal.

Landry would notch her hat trick at 53:45 on the clock with an assist by junior reservist Tianna Dimaria (Plantsville, Conn.). At 62:04, Landry would send the ball up the middle where sophomore defender Alishya Anselmo (Fall River, Mass.) would notch her first goal on the season with a shot from the left side.

With the score 8-0, Dougherty would break up the shut-out finding the back of the net off a well placed flick over the keepers head. Crossman crossed the ball for the assist.

Dougherty would send the ball back to Crossman for a beautiful long ball up the middle floating it over the backline past Newbury's senior goal keeper Rachel Wyszynski (Wilbraham, Mass.) at 67:50 on the clock.

Two minutes, Newbury would add some insurance goals. Garafalo would tally her second goal on the match off a three man weave up the field with Tomaselli grabbing her second assist.  The Nighthawks would score the final goal at 71:37 with Tomaselli notching her hat trick.

Rhodes finished with 13 saves facing 36 shots- 23 on goal, while Wyszynski picked up the win with one save facing eight shots.

Newbury is now 8-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the NECC, Bay Path falls to 3-13 on the year and 2-7 in conference play. The Wildcats conclude regular season play on Saturday, October 29th travelling to face Bard at a 1:00 p.m. start, while Newbury faces NECC opponent Lesley on Sunday, October 30th for a noon start.
