Wildcats Prevail Over Nighthawks

BROOKLINE, Mass.-The Newbury College women's tennis fell to Bay Path College, 9-0, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action Tuesday afternoon. Senior Sarah Costa (Tiverton, R.I./Tiverton) won both first singles and first doubles to pave the Wildcats to their fifth conference victory and eighth win overall on the season.

It was not an easy victory for the Wildcats, the Nighthawks gave them a good fight. Senior Kristen Conners (Riverside, R.I.) and junior Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, N.H.) took Costa and her doubles partner sophomore Symone Watson (Hamden, Conn.) to 16 sets before falling 9-7. On the second doubles court, the match was equally as tough. Juniors Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, R.I.) and Julie MacLeod (Buffalo, N.Y.) forced Wildcat doubles teammates Stephanie Morin (Springfield, Mass.) and Lianna Loveitt (Gorham, Maine) to a tie-break. The Wildcats eventually won the tie-breaker, 7-2, to take the match, 9-8.

MacLeod was impressive in fourth singles. The Upstate New York native held of Wildcat sophomore Teanna Montoya (Edgartown, Mass.) in the first set, 7-6, but was unable to hold it together as the second year player from Bay Path won sets two and three, 7-5, 7-5.

The loss drops Newbury to 1-11 on the season and 1-6 in conference action while Bay Path improves to 8-2 and 5-1 in the NECC.
