Bay Path nips Becker 5-4 in tennis action

Springfield, Mass. – The Bay Path University women's tennis team defeated Becker College, 5-4, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action, Tuesday evening.  Senior Taylor Wood (Castleton, N.Y.) led the way to the Wildcats third victory of the season with a three-set victory in first singles 6-3,3-6,6-0.

Bay Path grabbed an early 2-1 advantage in doubles. Wood and first doubles teammate senior Brittany Walsh (North Smithfield, R.I.) defeated junior Jennifer Lord (Fall River, Mass.) and sophomore Jacqueline Andrarde (Somerset, Mass.), 8-1. Senior Yismel Rosario (Methuen, Mass.) and senior Kim Drahushuk (Hudson, N.Y.) went to a tie breaker in a tight match winning 9-8, 7-3 over senior Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfiled, Ca) and First year Elizabeth Jezierski (Thompson, Conn.).

Senior Edna Aboagye (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) and senior Brittany Schafer (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lost a close match 6-8 to sophomore Dana Mahan (Manville, R.I.) and partner first year Emily Wodell (Feeding Hills, Mass.)  in second doubles.

In the singles portion of the match, senior Katrina Mannion (Lawrence, Mass.) earned the 3rd point by defeating Jezierski in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.  Lord beat Walsh 4-6, 6-1,6-1 to earn a point and make the match score 3-2 with 4 matches continuing. Next to finish was Wood going 3 sets to win over Andrade 6-3, 3-6. 6-0 for point # 4.  Mahan from Becker fought back to beat Rosario ina tough 3 setter, 1-6, 6-1, 7-7 (7-4) to make the score 4-3.  Sophomore Katie Leibowitz (Tolland, Conn.) earned the clinching match point with a 6-0,4-6, 6-3 win over Wodell.  The last match of the day was again a tight match with Saltvick beating Aboagye in 3 sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4. 

 

Bay Path improves to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play while Becker drops to 5-7 overall and 4-2 in the NECC.  The Hawks will be back in actionat on 10/1 vs. Newbury at 3:00 p.m.  The Wildcats return to the courts on 10/1 at Regis College for a 4:30 match.
