Bay Path Succumbs to Southern Vermont 3-0

Harkless and Chaplin Honored in Senior Night Recognition

HOLYOKE, Mass.- Senior outside hitter Nadine Harkless (Westfield, Mass.) led the Wildcats with eight kills and eleven digs in a tough 3-0 loss to New England Collegiate (NECC) leader Southern Vermont tonight. Harkless and senior outside hitter Vanessa Chaplin (Attleboro, Mass.) were honored in their final regular season home match for their four year collegiate careers. Game scores were 25-10, 25-13 and 25-15.

The Mountaineers, like the Wildcats have had stellar seasons with both teams breaking their programs winning records. Southern Vermont (28-2, 7-0 NECC) continue to top the conference remaining undefeated while Bay Path (12-10, 4-3 NECC) remain in fourth place out of nine conference schools.

Two Mountaineers tied with the match high 13 kills with junior right side hitter Alicia Manzo (Clovis, Calif.) leading all hitters with a sizzling .522 attack percentage; while junior middle hitter Danielle Healis (San Diego, Calif.) was close behind with a stellar .480 attack percentage. Manzo finished with four aces, four digs and one block assist for match high 17.5 points. Healis had one block solo and one block assist for 14.5 points.

Senior Southern Vermont setter Hershey Canta (Bataan, Philippines )tallied 33 assists, five digs, three kills and one ace. Fellow senior libero Joanna Hogue (Los Gatos, Calif.) topped all defenders with 15 digs.

Junior setter Ashley Provost (Ludlow, Mass.) finished the three games with 15 assists and nine digs. Chaplin also had nine digs for the night.

Despite the 3-0 loss, Bay Path stayed with the Mountaineers defensively notching 45 digs, only one less than Southern Vermont for the match.

Bay Path sophomore middle hitter Kate Bartels (Dalton, Mass.) put up Bay Path's lone block on the night with a phenomenal solo block in the final set shutting down the Mountaineers middle hitter. Bartels was second in kills for Bay Path with five. Freshman outside hitter Kacie Bayreuther (East Lyme, Conn.) pitched in four kills and five digs.

Bay Path will finish regular season play on Saturday travelling to Elms for an NECC match at 2:00 p.m., while, Southern Vermont concludes their season facing Daniel Webster in New Hampshire for a 3:00 p.m. match.  Southern Vermont has clinched the top spot and will host the 2011 Championships, even if they tie with Newbury with a 7-1 record they defeated Newbury and would win the tie-breaker.
