Bis Leads the Way for Bay Path in Season Opening Race at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-  The Wildcats of Bay Path opened up the 2011 season travelling to New York for their first 5K at the Vassar College Invitational. Freshman harrier Olivia Bis (South Windsor, Conn.) led the way for the Wildcats finishing in 94th place taking the 63rd spot with a time of 28:06. Bay Path finished 11th with a team score of 330.

For a sixth straight year, the Vassar College women's cross country team successfully defended its title as champions of the annual VC Invitational. By placing runners in the second through fifth slots, the Brewers fended off a spirited effort by SUNY New Paltz.

The Brewers, who had five of the top ten finishers in the 5k race, earned the championship with 24 points at the race held at the Farm. SUNY New Paltz finished second (36), led by individual champion Nicole Wischoff, who finished in 19:22 in the 121 runner field. Stevens was a distance third place (105), followed by Mount St. Mary (112) and Nyack (145), rounding out the top five.

All fourteen runners on the Bay Path roster raced this weekend. With the first five placing and the next two displacing. Sophomore Jessica Fields (Enfield, Conn.) was next to cross the line as the 100th harrier for the Wildcats at 28:54. Right behind Fields finishing 101 and 102 were junior Danielle Brown (Nashua, N.H.) and sophomore Katrina Trajkovski (Wilbraham, Mass.) with times of 29:01 and 29:20.

Rounding out the Wildcats top five was freshman Renae Brescia (New Milford, Conn.) with a time of 30:24.

The Wildcats next race will be held at Smith College on September 10th with a 11:00 a.m. shotgun start
