Field Hockey Hosts Pink Out Day to Help Raise Awareness
CHICOPEE, Mass.- Bay Path hosted New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opponents Wheelock today in their Pink Out Field Hockey match falling 9-0 in the battle of the Wildcats. Senior forward Katie Frade (Dartmouth, Mass.) topped all players scoring six goals for the Blue and Gold Wildcats including the first and eventual game winner at 3:30 on the clock. Despite a tough loss, Bay Path senior goalkeeper Bethany Rogers (Plymouth, Mass.) finished with 30 saves facing 59 shots, 44 on goal for her seventy minutes of play. Rogers is still holding the #2 spot in the Nation out of all DIII goalies for saves per game at 16.55. The Wildcats also hosted their annual Pink Out game to help raise money and awareness for the Cure.
Three other Wheelock Wildcats managed to score for the day. Sophomore forward Julia D'Onofrio (Salem, N.H.) netted the third goal in the 15th minute unassisted. Frade who single handedly scored the first two, had help from junior midfielder Alexis Mellis (East Longmeadow, Mass.) on the fourth goal and senior midfielder Alex LeBlanc (Atkinson, N.H.) on the sixth goal.
Coming out of the half, freshman midfielder Kat Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass.) added the seventh goal on a penalty stroke in the 55th minute of play. Frade again found the back of the net at 56:31 on the clock for the eighth goal. Sophomore forward Melanie Newberg (Raynham, Mass.) completed the scoring for Wheelock with the ninth goal at 69:26 on the clock.
Defensively, three Maroon (Pink) and White Wildcats helped patrol the net with five defensive saves. Junior midfielder, Ciara Antaya (Springfield, Mass.) finished with three defensive saves, while senior defender Angela Younger (Charlemont, Mass.) and junior defender Anna Austin (Stafford Springs, Conn.) each chipped in one save.
Wheelock's junior keeper Cassidy Smith (South Berwick, Maine) earned the shut-out. Wheelock is now 4-9 overall and 3-1 in the NECC, Bay Path is now 0-12 on the season and 0-4 in conference play. Both teams play Tuesday, October 24th with Wheelock traveling to Becker for a 4:00 p.m. start and Bay Path facing Elms at a 7:00 p.m. match.
