Elms College knocks off Bay Path 18-1 in season opener

Balanced Attack Lifts Women’s Lacrosse Past Bay Path College, 18-1

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior midfielders Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) and Lauren Mazza (Agawam, Mass.) each netted three goals and the Blazers had 13 players find the back of the net to help Elms to an 18-1 victory over Bay Path College in Friday afternoon’s non-conference women’s lacrosse game at Leary Field.

With the win, Elms improves to 1-1 on the season, while Bay Path falls to 0-1 on the season.

Elms scored 12 goals in the first half led by Narey’s and Mazza’s three scoring strikes each. Sophomore attacker Jillian Pirog (Ludlow, Mass.) added a pair of goals, while senior midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.), sophomore defender Melissa Welch (Westfield, Mass.), freshman defender Kathleen Tuechler (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Emily Dawson (Somers, Conn.) each scored in the first half to help stake a 12-0 lead.

Blazers’ junior attacker Nora McDonough (South Hadley, Mass.) who had three first half assists and two assists in the second half added a marker of her own with 27:11 left to play in the game. Senior defenderGabrielle Calvanese (Agawam, Mass.), sophomore defenders Emily Brown (Agawam, Mass.) andKieran Ramsey (Easthampton, Mass.), and freshmen midfielders Sabrina Pereira (Windsor, Conn.) andKaeliegh Dowe (Somers, Conn.) each scored a goal in the second half to secure the 18-1 win.

Lyons added a pair of assists, a game-high nine groundballs, three draw controls and caused three turnovers, Narey added six groundball pickups, and Tuechler won six draws to help drive the win. Elms’ sophomore net-minder Sarah Carpenter (Vernon, Conn.) sealed her first collegiate career win with a save.

Bay Path received a scoring strike on a free-position shot from Nicole Mitchell (Hopkinton, N.H.) who also picked up three groundballs. Courtney Scherer (Pawcatuck, Conn.) totaled a team-high four groundballs, while Katherine Navarro (Millbrook, N.Y.) and Megan Tancredi (Newington, Conn.) added two each in the losing effort.

Between the pipes, Kimberley Drahushuk (Hudson, N.Y.) made 12 saves including seven in the first 30 minutes of action.

Elms is back in non-league action on Friday, March 14 when it travels to Maritime College (N.Y.) for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
