Castleton Takes Two From Wildcats   

    

LONGMEADOW, Mass. – The Castleton University softball team captured both ends of a non-conference softball doubleheader from the Bay Path University Wildcats Tuesday afternoon at Ryan Field. The Spartans took the first game by a 20-0 count before capturing the nightcap 19-1.

Castleton opened the scoring with seven runs in the first inning and never looked back as runners crossed the plate in each of the first four innings.  Senior Madison Goodhart (Pawtucket, R.I.) was charged with the loss, despite allowing nine unearned runs in a complete-game effort for Bay Path.

Freshman Meghan Connors (Pawtucket, R.I.) led the way for Bay Path with a double, while senior teammates  Katrina Peck (Newington, Conn.), Marissa Sarna-McCarthy (Southampton, Mass.), and Jai Ruiz (Hadley, Mass.) each collected base hits for the home team.

Every position player who started for Castleton collected at least one hit, with senior Tori Swaine (Oakdale, N.Y.) leading the way with three hits, a home run and six RBI. Freshman Kylie Wright (Newport, Vt.) went the distance, tossing a four-hitter and striking out four.

The Spartans scored four runs in the first inning and added runs in each of the following four innings to close out their second win of the day. Sophomore Kayla Vance (Clifton, N.J.) was tagged with the loss, despite allowing nine unearned runs in a complete-game effort for the Wildcats.

Six different players collected hits for Bay Path as Vance, Peck, Connors and Goodhart were joined by sophomores Cameille Keith (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Noelle Bisignano (Cranston, R.I.) in the hit column.

The Wildcats' lone tally came in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Connors led off with a single, and freshman pinch runner Kamryn McCorison (Southwick, Mass.) scampered home from third on a Castleton error with one out.

Swaine registered her second three-hit game of the day for Castleton, while freshman Jamie Boyle (Pownal, Vt.) registered four hits, including a home run. Freshman Miranda Fish (Getzville, N.Y.) added four RBI for the Spartans. Freshman Olivia Bowen (Fair Haven, Vt.) went the distance, scattering six hits and fanning four.

 

Bay Path (7-17) returns to action against New England Collegiate Conference rival Southern Vermont Friday at 3:00 p.m. in Bennington, Vt.  Castleton (10-15) will host Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut State Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
