Bay Path wins 60-51 over Newbury College

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Newbury College women's basketball team fell to Bay Path University, 60-51,Thursday evening. Sophomore Briana Kujawski (Webster, Mass.) led four Wildcats in double-digits, registering a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards to earn their first victory of the season.

Offense was hard to come by in the opening minutes of play. Sophomore guard Janetis Cardona(Southbridge, Mass.) connected with junior captain Katelyn Roeser (Nashua, N.H.) at the perimeter to give the Nighthawks the one-point, 5-4 advantage but it would not last night. The Wildcats kept the Nighthawk offense quiet for the next 10 minutes with a 7-0 run before Roeser drained her second trey of the game, from Jovanna Sandifer (Boston, Mass.) with eight minutes remaining in the period.

But the damage had already been done. Bay Path limited Newbury to just four points the rest of the way as they went into the intermission with the 10-point, 22-12, advantage.

When the teams emerged from the locker room, the Nighthawk offense appeared to be rejuvenated as they outscored the Wildcats, 39-38. Roeser found Cardona open for a mid-range jumper to open the half before Sandifer connected with first year forward Destiny Spears (Arnold, Md.) to make it a two-possession game, 22-16.

The Nighthawks cut the deficit down to as little as five points three-times. Cardona capped off a two-minute, 7-0 run draining a trey from Roeser six minutes into the period. After the rough first half, Roeser caught on fire in the second, netting 12 of her game-high 18 points while dishing out all six of her assists.

However, even as the Nighthawks kept climbing closer, the Wildcats continued to extend their lead. With under five minutes to play Roeser made lay-up to pull Newbury to within five again before Head Coach Nate Stailey called a 30 second time-out.

Coming out of the time-out, the Wildcats started to pull away once again. But with under 30 seconds remaining in the game, senior center Jamie Vankoeverden (Brooklyn, N.Y.) knocked down one of two from the charity stripe to pull the Nighthawks to within five for the third and final time but it was not enough as the Wildcats held on for the nine-point victory.

Newbury drops to 3-9 and 2-4 in conference play while Bay Path improves 1-9 and 1-5 in the NECC. The Nighthawks will be back in action on Saturday January 17^th when they travel to Nashua, N.H. for a 12:00 p.m.tilt against Daniel Webster College. The Wildcats will also be in action Saturday afternoon when they host Becker College at 1:00 p.m.
