WESTON, Mass. – The Newbury College women's tennis team fell to Bay Path College, 9-0, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action, Wednesday evening.  Junior Brittany Walsh (North Smithfield, R.I.) led the way to the Wildcats first victory of the season with a three-set victory in first singles.

Bay Path wasted little time grabbing a quick, 3-0 advantage with a sweep of doubles. Walsh and first doubles teammate junior Taylor Wood (Castleton, N.Y.) defeated first year tens players Jessica Russo (Watertown, Mass.) and Destiny Spears (Arnold, Md.), 8-0. Junior Yismel Rosario (Methuen, Mass.) and Katie Leibowitz(Tolland, Conn.) grabbed second doubles while sophomore Edna Aboagye (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) and juniorKatrina Mannion (Lawrence, Mass.) took third doubles by the same score.

In the singles portion of the match, first year Sharifah Mukasa (Framingham, Mass.) gave Aboagye a battle in the second set of fifth doubles. After falling, 6-1 in the first set, Mukasa took Aboagye to eight games before falling 6-2.

First year player Edvana Goncalves (Brockton, Mass.) picked up two game victories in the fourth singles but ended up falling to Leibowitz, 6-1, 6-1. Spears and fellow first year Amonique Wint (Lynn, Mass.) dropped second and third singles, respectively, by similar scores.

However, in first singles, Walsh gained the upper hand with a 7-5 victory in the first set, Russo was not going to be denied, evening up the contest with a 10-7 win in the second set to even up the match. But the third set was a back-and-forth, nail-biter with Walsh coming out victorious by a score of 12-10.

Newbury falls to 0-4 on the season and 0-4 in conference play while Bay Path improves to 1-5 and 1-3 in the NECC. The Nighthawks will be back at it tomorrow when they travel to nearby Cambridge, Mass. for a 7:30 p.m. tilt against Lesley University.
