Bay Path Splits Softball Home Opener
In game two, sophomore Kaitlin Begin of Weare, NH, scored the
winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning after the score being
knotted 5-to-5. She nailed her first collegiate career “in
the park” homer to score the winning run for the Wildcats.
Bay Path’s junior shortstop Sarah Gates led the Wildcats on
the day hitting .750 (6-for-8) with four runs, two RBI and one
homerun.
Gates, junior centerfielder Samantha Gunseth of Swanzey, NH, and
co-captain and senior Sarah Palmer of Topsham, ME, all had multiple
hits in the opener with Gunseth adding two RBI.
In the nightcap, junior pitcher and NECC Pitcher of the Week Jess
Nizinski of West Springfield, MA, was awarded the win allowing five
runs on 12 hits, fanning two while walking two batters. Gates
brought the score within one run, pounding the only over-the-fence
homer bringing freshman Kate Lowy of South Burlington, VT, along
for the ride. Gunseth proceeded to score the game tying run in the
bottom of the 6th inning off a shot to deep right field by Palmer.
Begin would then come back in the 6th inning to take the lead off
her in-the-park homerun.
