Maine Maritime Picked to Repeat as NAC Women's Basketball Champions
Maine Maritime was chosen by the league's coaches as the North Atlnatic conference women's basketball preseason favorite. The Mariners, led by fourth year head coach Craig Dagan, received nine first place votes and 164 points in the NAC women's basketball preseason poll. Maine Maritime returns all five starters including NAC Player of the Year Alyssa Burns. The junior combo guard/forward finished thrid in the NAC in scoring (16.2 ppg), rebounding (9.3 ppg) and steals (2.8 spg) last season leading the Mariners to their first NAC title since 2002.
Maine-Farmington, which tied Maine Maritime with a 15-2 East Division mark but fell to the Mariners in the NAC Championship game, return four starters led by 2004-05 first-team all-conference selection Kari Simpson and Karen Sirois. The juniors averaged 15.0 points ,6.2 rebounds and 10.4 points, 5.2 assists respectively. The Beavers received four first place votes and 159 points overall.
