Wildcats Ground Eagles in Double Header Sweep

LONGMEADOW, Mass.—The Wildcats of Bay Path College hosted the Eagles of Green Mountain College  in NCAA Division III regional action after the Eagles were unable to play on their home turf due to weather. The Wildcats swept the Eagles taking the opener 6-5 and winning the nightcap 10-5.Bay Path was lead by senior infielder Kate Lowy (South Burlington, Vt.) who batted .667 on the day going 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBI.

Freshman pitcher/outfielder Keelin Dougherty (Northfield, N.H.) helped the Wildcats to their sweep slamming her first collegiate homerun along with tallying three RBI while picking up her third victory in the nightcap hurling 7.0 innings for a 3.00 ERA. She allowed five runs, three earned on eight hits. Dougherty (3-2) struck out four while walking six in the game.

Bay Path's game one hurler senior Alex Putnam (Topsfield, Mass.) also picked up her third win on the year tossing a complete game allowing five runs, two earned on seven hits. Putnam fanned two while walking three en route to a 2.00 ERA.

In game one, Bay Path held the Eagles in the top of the first scoring in the bottom when senior outfielder Katie Begin (Weare, N.H.) crossed the plate after freshman infielder Nicole Dexter (Delanson, N.Y.) sliced a single shot to right field.

Green Mountain scored next notching two runs in the second freshman designated player Dana Vocht (Old Bridge, N.J.) and junior infielder Chanleigh Casey (Hartford, N.Y.) each tallied a run for the Eagles. Green Mountain took the lead also scoring three more runs in the bottom of the third including a two run homer by freshman leftfielder Jessica Johnson (Washington, Mo.) bringing sophomore infielder Chelsea Paul (Northville, N.Y.) along for the ride. Casey scored again for the Eagles after shellacking a double shot to right center this would prove to be the final run for her team.

Bay Path answered back with five runs in the bottom of the third including the homer by Dougherty.  Sophomore infielder Jen Scionti (Cromwell, Conn.), Begin, Dexter and junior infielder Emily Evans (Westford, Mass.) each crossed the plate for the Wildcats.  Evans scored the eventual game winner after Lowy nailed a shot to right field notching two RBI.

Green Mountain junior hurler Cass Neimeth-Lazar (Red Hook, N.Y.) suffered the loss. Neimeth-Lazar (1-1) allowed six runs on eight hits while walking five and fanning three.

Game two saw the Wildcats scoring five runs early in the seven inning bout. Green Mountain waged a comeback in the fifth inning scoring four runs to knot the game 5-5. Bay Path answered back in the bottom of the fifth returning the call with four runs. Freshman Theresa West (Hadley, Mass.) would score on a passed ball.  Freshman catcher Mercedes Griffith (Malden, Mass.) hammered a single to left field plating Begin and Dexter.  Scionti would pinch run for Griffith and score after a passed ball and a stolen base. West would then come out in the sixth and add an insurance run for the Wildcats.

Dougherty would hold the Eagles in the sixth and seventh including three quick outs to finish the game 10-5.

Sophomore hurler Emma Lord (Greenville, N.Y.) would toss six innings for the loss. She allowed ten runs on five hits. Lord walked 15 while striking out nine for the game.

Bay Path is now 6-4 overall while Green Mountain falls to 2-2 on the season. Bay Path will host Daniel Webster College in their first NECC double header with the first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
