Bay Path Team Honored as 17th Nationally in NFCA All-Academic DIII

STARKVILLE, Miss.- Head Coach Steve Smith and the 2011 Bay Path Softball Team were honored by the NFCA ranked 17th out of 111 institutions nationally for NFCA Academic All- American with a team GPA of 3.431. The top institution was Northwestern (3.694). Ten Wildcats were also named NFCA All-American Scholar Athletes.

The #1 seed in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Softball playoffs, the Lesley University Lynx, won both of their games on day one of the conference championship weekend defeating #4 seed Bay Path College 6-2 and #2 seed Elms College 8-2. Elms won their first game of the day, beating #3 seed Mitchell College 4-0 before falling to the Lynx. Bay Path was sent home in the double-elimination tournament after losing to Mitchell 5-0.

Bay Path College senior outfielder Sarah Gates (Crown Point, Ind.), an occupational therapy major, was named the 2010 NECC Softball Player of the Year. In conference play, Gates played and started all 16 games with a .588 batting average and a .784 slugging percentage. She led the NECC in batting average (.588) and hits (30), second in on-base percentage (.651), second in doubles (8), second in walks (11), third in slugging percentage (.784) and fourth in runs scored (20). Defensively, Gates had 27 putouts, four assists and only two errors for a .939 fielding percentage. Gates is currently second in the nation in overall batting average (.545) and third in on-base percentage (.607).

LONGMEADOW, Mass.- The #4seed Bay Path Wildcats defeated the #5 Daniel Webster Eagles 8-0 in five innings of the 2010 New England Collegiate Conference Championship Quarterfinals this afternoon on the campus of Bay Path. Senior outfielder Sarah Gates (Crown Point, Ind.) led all players with two hits and three RBI.

For the second straight week, Bay Path senior shortstop/outfielder Sarah Gates (Crown Point, Ind.) earned player of the week honors batting a sizzling .583 (7-for-12). She hit safely on all four contests including three multiple hit games and eight RBI. Gates notched three doubles, one sac fly and was walked four times. She was perfect in fielding with six put-outs and two assists. Gates slugged .833 and had a .647 on base percentage.

Bay Path was led by junior outfielder Katie Begin (Weare, N.H.) who went 6-7 with 6 runs scored helping the Wildcats sweep the "Wildcats" of Wheelock College. In the opener Bay Path took the game 9-5 and used a 6 inning mercy win 16-8 in the nightcap. The two wins enabled Bay Path to set a single-season record for wins (20).

LONGMEADOW, Mass.—Bay Path senior outfielder Sarah Gates (Crown Point, Ind.) led all players for the day batting .571 (4-for-7) with three runs, two doubles and three RBI. Becker junior catcher Felicia Laufer (Salem, Conn.) led the Hawks batting .500 (4-for-8) for the double header with one run, one double and a massive grand slam finishing with five RBI on the day. The Hawks senior shortstop/catcher Shannon Tibbetts (Warren, Mass.)also reached a mileson for the Hawks notching her 100th career hit managing to clinch the record in the nightcap. Tibbetts went 2-for-7 for both games.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Bay Path senior shortstop/outfielder Sarah Gates (Crown Point, Ind.) led the Wildcats to a 4-0 conference sweep of Southern Vermont 3-2, 9-1 and Daniel Webster 16-15, 9-8. Gates batted .625 (10-for-16), slugged .938 and had a .700 on-base percentage. She had multiple hits in all four games including scoring two game winners and notching the game winning RBI in another. Gates notched three doubles and one single. She was perfect in fielding with eight put-outs and one assist. She went 4-for-5 with four RBI and five runs in the valiant eleven inning victory over the Eagles.

LONGMEADOW, Mass.- Bay Path’s senior Jess Nizinski (West Springfield, Mass.) led the way for the Wildcats’ NECC doubleheader sweep of the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College. Nizinski shut-down the Mountaineers 3-2 in the opener striking out 7 and scattering 8 hits and closed out the day with only allowing one hit and one run in 2nd game.

LONGMEADOW, Mass. – Behind two solid pitching performances from sophomore Cassandra Knox (SEA CLIFF, N.Y./North Shore), the Lesley University softball team swept Bay Path College 5-0 and 8-1 in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Lynx remained undefeated in conference play, improving to 12-8 (6-0 NECC) while the Wildcats dropped to 13-17 (2-6 NECC).

LONGMEADOW, Mass.—The Wildcats of Bay Path were unable to take down the Falcons of Fisher College today in softball action falling 11-3 in the opener and 9-3 in the nightcap. The Wildcat trio of senior centerfielder Sarah Gates (Crown Point, Ind.), senior infielder Sam Gunseth (Swanzey, N.H.) and freshman shortstop Sarah Safron (Southhampton, Mass.) all notched multiple hits on the day. Gates batted .667 (2-for-3) adding three runs and one RBI. Safron and Gunseth each tallied a .600 (3-for-5) batting average; Safron had three RBI and Gunseth scored two runs.
