Bay Path Falls to Mount Ida 71-41
Newton, MA – The Mount Ida College women’s basketball team opened up a 19-2 run never looking back en route to a 71-41 non-conference victory over visiting Bay Path College Tuesday evening in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs collect their second straight win good for their seventh overall (7-14) and remain at 3-5 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings. The visitors stay winless on the season at 0-22 and stand at 0-13 in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC).
The Mustangs opened the contest with a 19-2 run through the opening six minutes of the non-conference bid finished with a jumper by junior Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central).
Mount Ida held the Wildcats to single digit points for almost the entire first stanza pulling ahead by a half high 25 points (31-6) with nine minutes to go before the break after a successful lay-in by junior Amanda Bolio (Oxford, MA/Oxford).
The visitors would hit the double-digit mark with 5:27 remaining before the midway point after a good jumper by Wildcat sophomore Brittney Alexander (Enfield, CT/Fermi) trailing 33-11.
The Mustangs would eventually head into the locker room with a commanding 41-18 lead following a Rivera trifecta right before the buzzer. Mount Ida was impressive offensively shooting 47 percent from the floor in the first stanza and going 2-4 from downtown (50%).
The hosts made it a game high 38 point lead (66-28), their largest of the season, at the 10 minute mark in the first half after a successful jumper from the baseline by senior Erin Dufficy (Shelton, CT/Shelton).
Although the Wildcats were completely out of the contest at this point, they never gave up cutting the Mount Ida lead to 30 (71-41) with a minute to go in the game after a lay-in by freshman Justine Hook (Berwick, PA/Columbia-Montour Voc. Tech.). The action would end there giving the Mustangs their seven win of the year.
The Mustangs were led by three players in double figures with junior transfer Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME/Bryant University) and freshman forward Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) adding 15 points and four assists a piece. Bolio was also impressive with her first double-double as a Mustang with 11 points and 11 caroms.
The Wildcats saw two players in double figures with Alexander adding a game high 18 points and 11 rebounds good for a double-double. Hook notched 14 points going 5-11 from the floor.
The Wildcats (0-22) will host conference rival Southern Vermont (6-14) Thursday the 10th for a 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
