Bay Path Splits at Johnson State Tri-Match

JOHNSON, Vt. - Johnson State opened their season on Saturday at home in non-conference women's volleyball at Carter Gym.  The Badgers dropped a 3-0 (25-19, 25-8, 25-8) decision to Anna Maria College and then suffered a 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-11) to Bay Path College.  Anna Maria defeated Bay Path 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-15) in the middle match of the day's tri-match.  Johnson falls to 0-2, 0-0 North Atlantic Conference while Anna Maria moves to 4-2, 0-0 The Commonwealth Coast Conference and Bay Path sits a 2-2 overall and 0-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference.

In match one of the day Anna Maria College road the heavy hitting of Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) and Fab Jules (Leominster, Mass.) who finished with a combined 12 kills on the match to dispatch of host Johnson 3-0.  The Badgers hung close throughout the first game behind strong play from Alex Benlock (West Haven, Conn.) who finished with four kills while Chelsea Vallaincourt (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) tallied a pair of kills and two block solos.  The visiting Amcats stepped on the gas in games two and three cruising to easy match victory.  Alicia Bonneau (Worcester, Mass.) recorded seven assists with Nichole Robbie (Bellingham, Mass.) notching three kills, three assists, and three digs.

20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-15

In a see-saw battle throughout it was Anna Maria earning their second match win of the day coming from behind to beat Bay Path College 3-1.  The Amcats fell in the opening game 25-20 but rallied to win three straight.  Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) was too much for the Wildcats to handle as she racked up 19 kills while adding four block solos and nine digs.  Alicia Bonneau (Worcester, Mass.) set up Acosta throughout recording 10 assists with teammates Heather Wheeler (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Megan Leyton (Eastham, Mass.) each tallying eight assists.  Marie Barral (Worcester, Mass.) picked up a team-high 22 digs.

Bay Path saw Nadine Harkless (Westfield, Mass.) earn 11 kills and 18 digs while Ashley Provost (Ludlow, Mass.) handed out 14 assists and smacked eight service aces in the match.

In the final match of the day Johnson State jumped out to an early 12-3 lead in game one before the Wildcats, behind the sizzling serving of Ashley Provost (Ludlow, Mass.), came clawing back to the earn the win and eventually the match win 3-0.  Provost won 11 straight points on her serve in game one to help BPC to the game one win and finished with eight service aces to go with her match-high 16 assists while adding seven digs.  Davi Chuong (Easthampton, Mass.) finished with seven kills to lead the team with Michelle Huang (Boston, Mass.) notching five kills, three service aces, and four digs.

Johnson's Beth Lilligreen (North Kingstown, R.I.) recorded a team-best six kills while Kylie Van Etten's (Montrose, Penn.) 17 digs and five assists led the Badgers.  Emma Porrett (Glenview, Ill.) and Jessica Pafumi (Monson, Mass.) each picked up 10 digs with Pafumi adding four kills.

Johnson will next play at Lyndon State College in a non-conference match on Saturday, September 18 at 11:00 am.  Anna Maria will travel to Daniel Webster College on Tuesday for their next match while Bay Path will play at MCLA on Saturday, September 18.
