Lynx Pounce Past Wildcats 7-1
LONGMEADOW, Mass.—Despite a tough loss, Bay Path freshman forward Keelin Dougherty (Northfield, N.H.) netted her first collegiate goal in a 7-1 loss to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opponent Lesley University this afternoon at Ryan Field in NCAA DIII women's soccer action.
The Lynx were led by freshman midfielder Veronica Halen (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore midfielder Kate Ryder (Glastonbury, Conn.). Halen and Ryder combined for four goals. Halen launched the Lynx attack right out of the box scoring the first goal at 38 seconds on the clock off a rebound shot.
Ryder would follow suit and head the eventual game winner at 3:15 on the clock from a corner kick by Halen. Five minutes later the Lynx would benefit from a own goal after a rebounded shot deflected from Bay Path's junior keeper Janise Shabazz (New Castle, Del.).
The Wildcats would hold the scoring to three points heading into the half-time break.
Sophomore defender Chelsea Contre (Pomfret, Conn.) would launch the second half attack for the Lynx tallying her first goal of the season off a deflected shot by Shabazz following a corner kick.
Halen would notch her second goal in the 60th minute after great drive by freshman defender Casey Decareau (Haverville, Mass.) picking up the assist of a cross inside the box.
With the scoreboard showing a 5-0 deficit for the Wildcats, Dougherty would break up Lesley's shut-out in the 61st minute immediately answering Halen's goal. Fellow freshman Wildcat Sarah Azevedo (East Longmeadow, Mass.) would record the assist after driving the reserve freshman goalkeeper Victoria Ellis (Laguna, Beach, Calif.) out of the box. Dougherty followed her shot and ended up propelled into the back of the net.
Ryder and Decareau would add two more insurance goals for the Lynx in the 64th and 86th minute of play. Senior midfielder Alyson Durben (Stow, Mass.) and sophomore striker Jenna Fralick (Woburn, Mass.) each had assists.
Shabazz faced 39 shots, 21 of which were on goal giving up seven goals while notching 14 saves. Lynx starting goalie sophomore Corrine Dasti (Eastham, Mass.) went 45 minutes of play with four saves, while Ellis gave up one goal with one save.
Halen topped all scorers with five points, including two goals and one assist. Dougherty had six shots, while senior midfielder Jacqui Siddle (Palmer, Mass.) added three shots for the Wildcats.
Lesley is now 6-4-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the NECC, while Bay Path falls to 1-9-0 on the season and 0-3-0 in conference play. Bay Path will travel to Southern Vermont on October 9th for a 3:00 p.m. conference match, while Lesley will host Wheelock at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
