Bay Path Falls 6-0 to Mariners in Senior Night
LONGMEADOW, Mass.--- The three Bay Path seniors said goodbye in their final regular season game today at Ryan field in a disappointing 6-0 loss against New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) rival the Mariners of Mitchell College in women's soccer action. Senior midfielder Jacqui Siddle (Palmer, Mass.), senior midfielder Sara Antonacci (Somersville, Conn.) and senior forward Sandra Caldas (Leal Da Camara, PT) each were honored after the conclusion on the match for their four years of play at Bay Path.
Junior forward Leslie Briggs (Dighton, Mass.) led the way for the Mariners attack scoring five points including two goals and an assist.
Mitchell struck first in the eighth minute of play after junior midfielder Shannen Pelletier (Coventry, R.I.) connected with a header off a cross inside by freshman teammate Caley McClendon (Keene, N.H.). This goal would eventually prove to be the game winner for the Mariners.
Junior forward Nikki Hoxie (Winsted, Conn.) would make some huge drives down the field outshooting all players with six shots. Hoxie landed her tenth goal of the season after nailing the post on the first try and then taking advantage of the rebound to net the second goal in the 16th minute of play.
Briggs would then connect with sophomore reservist Amanda Hernandez (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) in the 25th minute after driving the ball up the center and passing it inside. Hernandez would then make a flying leap over junior keeper Janise Shabazz (New Castle, Del.) to score the third goal.
The score would remain a 3-0 advantage to Mitchell heading into the halftime break.
Briggs would then net the next two goals unassisted in the 50th and 53rd minute. The final goal of the game unfortunately was an own goal by Bay Path to bring the final score to 6-0.
Shabazz would suffer the loss with five goals against and four saves, freshman reserve keeper Ashley Ralston (Chester, Vt.) would also make four saves and allow only one goal. Mariners' freshman goalie Kaylee Woodford (Niantic, Conn.) would pick up her fourth shut-out with four saves in the match.
Siddle would take two shots while Antonacci had one shot for the game. Siddle would finish her career leading the team with 16 points four goals and eight assists. Mitchell is now 7-7-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the NECC while Bay Path concludes their regular season at 4-11-0 and 3-5-0 in the conference play.
