Nighthawks Fly Past Wildcats 2-1 in Conference Opener

LONGMEADOW, Mass.- Junior midfielder Brittany Briggs (Arlington, Vt.) scored the lone goal for Bay Path University off a penalty kick in the 19th minute of play. Bay Path fell 2-1 to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) rival Newbury College in the conference season opener today at Ryan Field.

The Nighthawks struck first in the ninth minute of play when freshman forward Shannon Walsh (Massapequa, N.J.) managed to draw out the Wildcats sophomore keeper  Alma Rizvani (Prospect, Conn.) and score the first goal of the match.

Five minutes later Walsh again would find the back of the net for the Nighthawks at 14:43 on the clock off a cross by freshman midfielder Ace Morley-Wolbert (Williamstown, N.J.).

Both teams would remain scoreless after the made PK by Briggs at 18:40.

Newbury's junior goalie Elizabeth Fox (Orono, Maine) picked up the win with five saves facing 10 shots. Rizvani suffered the loss facing 15 shots with seven saves.

Bay Path is now 1-6 on the season and 0-1 in the NECC, while Newbury advances to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Bay Path will host Mount Holyoke on Tuesday, September 30th at 4:00 p.m., while Newbury travels to Curry College on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. match.
