Bay Path loses 5-0 in season opener

Women's Soccer Drops Bay Path 5-0 in Season Opener

NEWTON, Mass. (8/30/14) – The Lasell College women's soccer team opened the season with a 5-0 victory over Bay Path College in the Lasell College Kick-off tournament at Taylor Field on Saturday afternoon. The Lasers start the season 1-0, while the Wildcats slipped to 0-1 for the 2014 season.

Lasell senior Bridget Lynch (Dover, N.H.) scored a pair of goals in the victory, sophomore Megan Cullen (Amesbury, Mass.) netted a goal, and freshmen Casey Meissner (Sandwich, Mass.) and Sophie Lamb (Wells,  Maine) each scored in their collegiate debuts. Cullen and Meissner each added assists as did junior Bridget Munnelly (Bellingham, Mass.) and sophomore Kristen Hill (Pittsfield, Mass.) in the victory. Freshmen Sarah LeClair (Belchertown, Mass.) posted a clean sheet in her college debut, picking up the victory in goal.
Bay Path sophomore Alma Rizvani (Prospect, Conn.) was outstanding in goal despite the result, stopping 11 shots in the match while being under fire throughout.

Lasell got on the board in the 14th minute of action when Cullen split a pair of defenders with a feed to Bridget Lynch, and the senior scored her first goal of the season. Cullen then netted her first of the year when she found space inside the top of the 18-yard box to collect a ball from Meissner and beat Rizvani to give Lasell a 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Bay Path was able to keep Lasell from adding to their lead for the remainder of the opening half, maintaining the two-goal margin.

Meissner then made it a 3-0 score when her shot from 25 yards out was just beyond the outstretched arms of Rizvani and just under the crossbar in the 70th minute of action. Bridget Munnelly found Bridget Lynch in the box for Lynch's second tally of the match in the 78th minute, and Lamb's goal from Hill in the 88th minute produced the final 5-0 margin.

Bay Path will face-off with Salve Regina in the consolation game of the tournament at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday August 31st. The Lasers will take on Keene State College in the championship match at 2:30 p.m.
