Bay Path Lands Nighthawks 7-2

BROOKLINE, Mass.-The Newbury College women's tennis team fell to Bay Path College, 7-2, Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops the Nighthawks to 3-6 on the season and 1-4 in the conference while the Wildcats improve to 6-1 and 4-1 in the NECC.

Bay Path took an early lead winning second doubles. Wildcats senior Carolina Ynguanzo (Springfield, MA/Science and Technology) and freshman Symone Watson (Hamden, CT/Hamden) defeated sophomores Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) and Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, RI/North Providence), 8-1. But Newbury stayed composed and won the last two doubles matches. 

Sophomore Julie MacLeod (Buffalo, NY/Frontier Senior) partnered with freshman Stephanie Ruffin (Waltham, MA/Waltham) to even up the doubles competition, winning third doubles 8-4. Senior Stephanie Valentine (Pleasant Valley, CT/Saint Paul Catholic) and junior Kristen Conners (Riverside, RI/East Providence) won first doubles, 8-5, to win overall doubles, 2-1.

In singles, Bay Path senior Lauren Hangasky (Ludlow, MA/Ludlow) paved the way to the 6-0 singles sweep with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in first singles. MacLeod was solid in the singles competition for Newbury, forcing a third set, winning the second set 7-5 before falling in the third set tie-break, 7-5.
