Wildcats Scale Mountaineers 3-1 In NECC Women's Soccer Action

LONGMEADOW, MASS.- Senior Defender Christine Hollingworth (Lenox, Mass.) netted the eventual game winning goal for the Wildcats of Bay Path defeating New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) rival the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont 3-1 in women's soccer action this afternoon at Ryan Field.

Junior forward Jacqui Siddle (Palmer, Mass.) quickly struck first in the third minute of play on an unassisted goal after dribbling it past midfield and with great footwork was able to slide past the Mountaineers backline to net the first goal of the game at 2:14 on the clock.

Both teams were able to hold off any more goals heading into the half-time break.

Hollingworth would then notch the eventual game winning goal at 51:22 off two crosses starting with a nice pass from the corner by senior midfielder Christina Calabrese (Hamilton, N.J.) who then flicked it to sophomore defender Bridgette Flores (Somerville, Mass.).

Eight minutes later the Wildcats would net an insurance goal at the 61st minute of play. Freshman forward Samantha Bechta (Holyoke, Mass.) would produce off a corner kick by Siddle.

Southern Vermont's freshman forward Shawnee Webster (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) would break-up Bay Path's shut-out in the 72nd minute of play. After a foul, Smith was able to take advantage of a free kick sailing it over the Wildcat four-man wall to slide over the head of senior goalkeeper Samantha Gunseth (Swanzey, N.Y.).

Gunseth finished with six saves and one goal against for the victory. Mountaineer keeper Amber Mulhern (Bennington, Vt.) suffered the loss with eight saves.

Bay Path is now 3-10 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while Southern Vermont falls to 0-13 on the season and 0-6 in the NECC. Bay Path will be back in action on Saturday, October 24th travelling to NECC opponent Newbury for a 3:00p.m. start.
