Bay Path Claws Wheelock In Battle of Cats

LONGMEADOW, Mass.-Senior Goalkeeper Samantha Gunseth (Swanzey, N.H.) led the Bay Path Wildcats for their first shut-out on the season defeating New England Collegiate Conference rival the Wildcats of Wheelock 2-0 today at Ryan Field. She tallied eleven saves for the contest. Defense was the key factor in Bay Path's first conference victory on the season.

Gunseth, along with the Bay Path back-line, proved too much for the Wheelock offense who rifled off 16 shots for the match. Anchoring the back-line was senior defender Silvia Galvan (Wilbraham, Mass.) along with senior Christine Hollingworth (Lenox, Mass.), sophomore Dajara Wright (Chicopee, Mass.) and sophomore Dani Renfrew (West Barnet, Vt.).

Both Wildcats battled throughout the first half heading into the break scoreless. Bay Path came back for the final 45 minutes ready to play hard.

Junior forward Sandra Caldas (Leal Da Camara, PT) struck first netting the eventual game winner off a beautifully launched cross from the corner by teammate freshman forward Katelyn Dupuis (Chicopee, Mass.) at the 57th minute of play.

With 78:40 on the clock, Dupuis hammered a deflected shot past senior goalkeeper Erin Reardon (Old Town, Maine) for the final goal of the game.  Junior forward Jacqui Siddle (Palmer, Mass.) started the sequence of shots with a long ball blocked by Reardon, next Caldas attempted another shot only to be deflected and shot again by Dupuis for the insurance goal for the Bay Path Wildcats.

Reardon finished with seven saves and two goals against. Six Wheelock Wildcats took shots on goal including senior midfielder Rachael Schauer (Brookline, Mass.) who led the Blue and Gold Wildcats with four shots and three on goal.

Bay Path was lead by Dupuis who tallied three points, eight shots and five shots on goal for the match.

Bay Path is now 2-10 overall and 1-3 in conference play, while Wheelock falls to 2-9 on the season and 1-3 in the NECC. Bay Path will host another conference rival Southern Vermont on Saturday, October 17th at 2:30 p.m. Wheelock will travel to Elms on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. start time.
