Wheelock Prevails in NECC Battle of Wildcats

LONGMEADOW, Mass. - Junior forward Milbrey Hendrix (Marion, Mass.) led the Wheelock College Wildcats with two goals and one assist in a 7-0 shut-out of the home Bay Path Wildcats today at the Ryan field in New England Collegiate Conference field hockey action.

The Maroon and White Wildcats had two players with shots on goal. Junior forward Sarah Gates (Crown Point, Ind.) had two shots including one breakaway shot from the midfield line that went wide. Fellow reservist sophomore Meg Montayne (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) also had a spectacular shot that was blocked.

Hendrix struck first in the 11th minute of play with the first and eventual game winning shot off a rebound.

Freshman defender Chelsey Ballard (Mansfield, Mass.) took advantage of a blocked shot scoring four minutes later for the Blue and Gold Wildcats. Coming off the bench, freshman midfielder Despina Savvoulides (Norwalk, Conn.) grabbed a piece of the ball chipping it over to Ballard for the assist.

In the 22nd minute of play, Savvoulides then scored the third goal after sending the ball in on a penalty corner to Hendrix who crossed it back to the corner.

Wheelock found the back of the net again in the 27th minute when freshman defender Rachel Robohm (North Eastern, Mass.) grabbed a pass from sophomore reservist Ashley Howard (Gardner, Mass.) inside the box.

Sophomore midfielder Kylie Hefford (Exeter, N.H.) lit up the second half for the Blue and Gold Wildcats in the 42nd minute of play driving the ball in unassisted for the fifth goal of the match.

In the 50th minute of play freshman forward Jacquilyn Hull (Braintree, Mass.) notched the sixth goal off a deflected shot by junior midfielder Michaela Ross (Mansfield, Mass.).

Hendrix finished up the scoring for Wheelock in the 61st minute.

Wheelock tallied 19 shots and 14 on goal, while Bay Path had three shots with two on goal. Penalty corners were ten to two in favor of the Blue and Gold.

Bay Path's sophomore keeper Samantha Berrios (New York, New York) tallied five saves. Wheelock's goalie junior Meredith Race (Marion, Race) had two saves for her first shut-out on the season.

Wheelock is now 1-7 on the season and 1-1 in the NECC winning their first match of the season, while Bay Path falls to 0-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Bay Path will be back in action on September 29th at Elms for another NECC bout at 7:00 p.m.
