Bay Path Opens 2009 Campaign with 7-0 Loss to Thomas

LONGMEADOW, Mass.-The Wildcats of Bay Path opened the season with a tough 7-0 loss to the Terriers of Thomas College.

A trio of Terriers each scored two goals on the season opener with junior forward Ali Kriegel (Winslow, Maine) leading the way with two goals and one assist for Thomas.

Junior midfielder Kellie Martel (Cambridge, Maine) struck first in the eighth minute finding the back of the net off a pass inside the box by Kriegel. This goal would prove to be the eventual game winning shot for Thomas. The Terriers found the net again in the 17th minute of play when Kriegel took advantage of a misplayed corner and drove past the defenders  and scored.

The next two goals were netted by freshman midfielder Chelsie Morris (Livermore, Maine). Morris scored her first two collegiate goals with both tallies coming less than a minute apart.  Both insurance goals were played well as Morris rebounded two blocked shots and managed to find the net twice for her efforts.

Kriegel came out of the break a gain ready to score for the Terriers she landed her final goal and the teams' fifth in the 39th minute after grabbing her own rebounded shot and guiding the ball past Bay Path's second half keeper sophomore Samantha Berrios (New York, N.Y.).

The Terriers' freshman forward Allison Defilipp (Brewer, Maine) notched her first and second collegiate goal to finish the scoring for Thomas. Defilipp scored the sixth goal in the 57th minute after driving the ball from 20 yards back past Bay Path's backline. The final goal of the night came after Defillip scored off a block from the Wildcats' keeper that dribbled in the corner of the net.

Thomas had a total of 24 shots for the game and 16 penalty corners to Bay Path's none. The Wildcats' starting goalie junior Kim Barbato (Saylorsburg, Penn.) suffered the loss with four goals against and four saves on the opener.  Berrios allowed three goals and had two saves.

Sophomore defender Maegan Whitcomb (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) recorded two defensive saves for the Wildcats.

Bay Path falls to both 0-1 on the season, while Thomas is now 1-0 overall. The Wildcats will host St. Joseph's of Maine on Monday the 7th for a Labor Day bout at 2:00 p.m.
