Eagles Soar Past Wildcats in NECC Women’s Basketball Action

HOLYOKE, Mass.-The Eagles of Daniel Webster remain at the top of the New England Collegiate conference women's basketball standings after flying high past the Wildcats of Bay Path with a final score of 80-46. Breaking her previous collegiate career best NECC Rookie of the Week, freshman guard Ariel Guzman (Yonkers, N.Y.) topped all players with 17 points to lead the Eagles to their seventh conference win. Guzman also had five assists and three steals.

Bay Path freshman guard Brittney Alexander (Enfield, Conn.) finished with 14 points for the Wildcats. She chipped in four boards, two blocks and two assists.

Daniel Webster outhustled Bay Path in the paint and under the glass nailing 40 of the points inside 12 of which were put backs for the Eagles. The Wildcats managed to only score 14 of their points inside the paint with only seven off of offensive rebounds. The Eagles almost doubled the Wildcats rebounding efforts with 41 boards to Bay Path's 26 on the night.

For the game, Daniel Webster shot 51.7% from the floor, while Bay Path's shooting percentage was only 37.3% for the contest.

The Eagles managed to spread the wealth with eight of their nine players tallying points. Four players scored in the double figures including Guzman. Sophomore small forward Alycia Gervais (Windham, Conn.) notched a double double tallying 15 points and ten rebounds. She also pitched in three assists, one block and one steal going 6-for-9 from the field. Junior starting center Tonisha Tate (Lynn, Mass.) finished with eleven points.

Coming off the bench, sophomore forward Kristen Murphy (Woodstock, Vt.) had some big numbers nailing 12 points and six rebounds.

Senior guard Christina Calabrese (Hamilton, N.J.) pulled off a second half rally for the Wildcats pitching in 12 points launching two buckets from behind the arc.

Bay Path falls to 3-12 overall and 0-7 in the NECC, while Daniel Webster improves to 12-4 and undefeated at 7-0 in conference play. Both teams will be back in action on this week with Daniel Webster hosting Newbury Saturday the 30th at 1:00 p.m. Bay Path hosts Becker at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday the 28th in their yearly "Pink Out Game".
