Wildcats Fall Short Against Mountaineers, 55-51

BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team defeated the Bay Path College Wildcats in New England Collegiate Conference play 55-51 Thursday night at the Field House. Sophomore guards Alyssa Davis and Joa Claircius led all scorers with 21 and 20 points respectively.

The Mountaineers came out strong holding the Wildcats from scoring in the first three minutes until senior forward Ashley Cimmino, who had a double-double with 12 points, 13 boards, knocked down a three. SVC led for the first 10 minutes of the game when Bay Path's Jessica Hunt knocked down a jumper to make it 12-10.

Southern Vermont played steady for the 1st half behind Joa Claircius as she was 5-9 from the field for 10 points to keep the Mountaineers within two at the half 26-24. Claircius finished with a double-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds, as well as eight steals and three assists.

Bay Path led in the second half until freshman forward Christie Henry made a layup to put SVC up by one with 15:40 left on the clock. The Mountaineers would never relinquish the lead as it was on its first NECC win of the season. Henry finished with eight points and eight rebounds as Southern Vermont dominated the boards for much of the game (66-53). Junior forwards Tiarra Hall and Kiara Bates led the rebounding for SVC with 12 and 10 respectively.

Hunt led the Wildcats with 15 points and sophomore forward Nadine Harkless contributed 13 points to round out the Bay Path offensive threat.

The win improves the Mountaineers to 2-12 overall and 1-6 in the NECC, while the Wildcats fall to 3-10 overall and 0-5 in the NECC.

The Wildcats are back in action Saturday, January 23rd, when they host NECC foe Wheelock College (3-10, 2-2 NECC) at 5:00 p.m.
