Wildcats Fall Short to #1 Daniel Webster 62-60
NASHUA, N.H - In their final regular season tune up before the post-season, the Daniel Webster College women's basketball team reached the 20-win mark for the first time in program history, posting a 62-40 victory over Bay Path College in a NECC matchup Thursday night at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.
Vanessa Bosques (N. Windham, Conn.) notched 18 points and a game-high four steals while Alyssa Regan came off the bench to add 10 points as the Eagles improved to 20-5 overall and finished their NECC campaign at 15-1, having clinched the regular season title Wednesday night with a win at Newbury.
Joyce Chagan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine), Alycia Gervais (Windham, Conn.) and Tonisha Tate (Lynn, Mass.) added eight points each with both Gervais and Tate pulling down 11 rebounds apiece.
Jessica Hunt (Madison, Conn.) led the Wildcats (5-18, 2-13 NECC) with a game high 20 points and four blocks, while Brittany Alexander (Enfield, Conn.) added seven. Christina Calabrese (Hamilton, N.J.) added a team high six rebounds along with six points.
The Eagles now have an eight-day layoff until the final four of the NECC championship tournament, which will take place at Vagge Gymnasium on Friday, February 26th and Saturday, February 27th.
The Eagles will host either Becker College or Elms College in the first semifinal game at 6:00 p.m., while second seeded Lesley University will face either Mitchell College or Newbury College in the second semifinal at 8:00 p.m.
The championship is slated for Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
The Eagles never trailed in the contest, scoring the game's first eight points and built a 17-5 lead seven minutes in.
After Hunt knocked down two at the line to cut the lead to 10 (19-9), the Eagles followed with a 7-0 run including two layups from Bosques and another from Kaylea Parkin (Red Hook, N.Y.) for a 17-point lead. The Eagles would hold Bay Path to 15 first half points and lead by 26 (41-15) at the break.
The lead would reach as high as 30 (45-15) after a Bosques three early in the second and Bay Path would pull no closer than 20 the rest of the way.
DWC would finish with a 45-32 advantage on the boards and added 17 steals as part of 25 Wildcat turnovers.
Bay Path closes its season Saturday at Elms College beginning at 1:00 p.m. Bay Path will serve as the home team.
