Wildcats Tie for 3rd at SUNY Canton Women’s Soccer Tourney

CANTON, N.Y-  In day one of the SUNY Canton  Soccer Tournament the host Roos defeated Morrisville State 6-0 , while the Wildcats of Bay Path fell to the Spartans of D'Youville 7-0 in day one of the tourney. The Spartans eventually took the title defeating the host SUNY Canton 3-2 in the championship match, while Bay Path managed to stay knotted with the Mustangs in the consolation game.

Day One:  The Spartans struck fast and hard on the Wildcats with freshman forward Rebecca Alvira (Buffalo, N.Y.) netting the first and eventual game winner in the sixth minute of play. Alvira proceeded to repeat with a goal a minute later. Also scoring for the Spartans in the first half were Lauren Walsh (Kenmore, N.Y.), Elizabeth Lyons (Lancaster, N.Y.), Abby Blakely (Rochester, N.Y.) and Samantha Pfohl (Depew, N.Y.).

Sophomore goalie Marina Rhodes (Providence, R.I.) suffered the loss  for her first half effort allowing six goals on 11 shots on goal (13 total shots) tallying five saves.  Fellow sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Ogden (Springfield, Mass.) patrolled the net the second half only allowing one goal facing four shots on goal with three saves.

Nicole LaVere (Clarence, N.Y.) would notch the seventh and final goal for the Spartans. Christina Ventresca (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) picked up the shutout and Danielle Gehen (West Seneca, N.Y.) had three assists.

Day Two: In the consolation game, Bay Path stepped up their game coming home with a tie knotting the day 1-1 with the Morrisville Mustangs.

Both teams remained scoreless in the first half of play with Morrisville striking first in the 56th minute when sophomore forward  Lindsay Peri (Marathon, N.Y.) found the back of the net off an inside pass by freshman Morgan Hewitt (Camden, N.Y.).

With around eight minutes remaining in the game sophomore forward Melissa Toler (Paso Robles, Calif.) knotted the game 1-1.  Junior midfielder Keelin Dougherty (Northfield, N.H.) recorded the assist.

Ogden recorded the tie totaling 12 saves and only one goal against for her 120:00 minutes in the net. She faced 17 shots for the day.  Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Zidzik (Lambertville, N.J.) recorded the tie, tallying eight saves facing ten shots.

Bay Path is now 0-1-1 on the season. The Wildcats will travel to face Albertus Magnus on Wednesday, September 5th at a 4:00 p.m. start.
